On Saturday, November 1st, 2014, the Memory Walkers hosted their 1st Annual Poker Run to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease. Approximately $500.00 was raised from this event and will be used to increase awareness of the disease.
The event kick-off at 8am when the first bike left out; bikes continued to leave out until 10am. Memory Walkers’ Vice-President, Sandra McDaniel said: “It was most certainly a success…A little cool, but nonetheless, we appreciate all the volunteers and those who came ride. I would like to thank the donors that helped this event be successful.” The last bike arrived back at the fairgrounds at 12noon after completing the 72.5 mile route through Washington and St. Tammy Parishes. Participants were able to participate in games after completing the route and were awarded points that could be applied to door prize tickets. Additionally, participants were able to bid on auction items in a silent auction. Memory Walkers’ President Kreig Todd was Master of Ceremonies. When asked for a statement, Todd stated: “I am very proud of the initiative that my vice-president [Sandra McDaniel] took and of the time given by our members. I would like to thank the Members of Franklinton High School National Honor Society that helped. Without them, we could not have done what we did.”
The organization is looking at hosting another Poker Run on the Longest Day on June 20, 2015. This date for the Poker Run is not set in stone. However, a date will soon be released. McDaniel ended the event by telling all participants: “Keep your eyes open! We are looking at doing this again!”
